What are the little black spots in my fiberglass pool?

When you see little black spots on your fiberglass swimming pool, it could be a few things.  First, try to remove them with a vitamin C tablet.  If that doesn’t work, then have your water chemistry tested to see if you have a high phosphate level.  If you do, use a phosphate remover then balance the pool water to see if that solves the problem.

Cobalt can also cause spots like these.  The gel coat delaminates a bit from the surface and these spots can develop.  Just place a CuLator Ultra 4.0 into the pump basket to see if that lowers the metal level to remove the staining.

Gel Coat delamination does happen with some fiberglass pools.  Check with your pool manufacturer to see what they can do, but doing a phosphate, or stain treatment is much easier to deal with.

“David M. is the guy!  If you need a “go to pool guy” to answer pool chemistry questions call David.  I have a 25.000 gallon in-ground pool(reason we purchased the house 5 years ago). Every year has been a challenge to open the pool.  We are on a well with lots of Iron and other metals.  Every year I would go to the local pool store and ask for advice on how to open my pool.  Every year I would end up spending hundreds of dollars on chemicals that they said would give me sparkling clear pool water.  Every year it would take a month or more just to get the pool to a swimmable state.  I would get the pool balanced and then they would say add more chlorine(more money).  One year after shocking the pool(just add more they said) my pool water turned a very pretty purplish brown! Unswimmable!  I looked online for help and I stumbled across the Periodic Products website.  I called them up and spoke with David.  I explained what was going on with my pool and he said stop.  He explained what was going on chemistry wise with my pool water.  He than laid out a plan step by step to get my pool water to that beautiful crystal clear state.  David said do this today and call me tomorrow and let me know what happened.  He did this over and over again until I had crystal clear pool water.  The amazing thing about his advice was every time he said to do something I got the exact result he said I would get.  It was as if he was at my house performing the task himself!  Another amazing thing was he didn’t try to sell me anything!  The only thing I purchased from David was  a CuLator 4.0 pack.  This I needed to eliminate the metals in my pool water from my well.  David gave me hundreds of dollars worth of advice and information free of charge and he did so with so much joy.  His advice gave me joy because it worked but it seemed to give him even greater joy because he had helped me. Again David is the guy!  I can’t say that enough or with enough enthusiasm!  I am now enjoying my pool(the reason we bought the house).  Thank You David and Periodic Products.   Marshall Washington State Pool owner

Why does the CuLator Ultra 4.0 Swell Up?

culator metal eliminator
Holding CuLator Ultra 4.0 Up To The Light
When CuLator is added to the skimmer or pump basket, it usually swells up and becomes very puffy. This is normal. The best way to see if the CuLator is catching metals is to hold it up to the light. In this case, there is some blue at the top showing that the CuLator is binding copper out of the swimming pool water and preventing stains.

Why does the CuLator Ultra 4.0 puff up? The CuLator polymers “hydrate” when they enter the water and puff up.  As they bind the metals out of the pool water, the CuLator bags will “shrink” back down to a much smaller size.  So, when is CuLator finished?  It is easier to tell with the Ultra 4.0 because the bag will be about 1/2 full, or the contents will feel watery inside or they will feel sandy.  With the 1.0 it is a little bit harder to tell, but when the bag feels almost empty or there is a lot of color in the bag after a month, then it is exhausted.

How can I get rid of rust in a fiberglass pool?

Rust is really iron in the water.  To remove rust or iron in a fiberglass swimming pool, you just need to add a CuLator Ultra 4.0 into your pump basket and let it work all summer.

If you are using well water to top off your pool, then add a maintenance dose of Metal Sequester to the water when you are topping off.

If you have rust, iron, or other metal staining, use the No-Drain Metal Stain Eliminator Kit to remove the stains without having to drain the pool and do an acid wash.  Acid washes are very hard on the surface of the pool.  Try a No-Drain Metal Stain Eliminator Kit first to see if that will solve your problem.

The very best way to prevent water discoloration and metal staining on your new pool surface is to remove all the metals from the fill water with a FillFast Metal Remover and Water Pre-Filter:

However, if you are having a professional build your pool, make sure they know you want to use CuLator Ultra 4.0 in the pump basket to remove all stain-causing metals.  They generally will use a sequestering agent, but that isn’t enough.  You see, if you have a gunite or diamond brite or any aggregate surface, you must brush the surface every day for 30 days to help the surface cure and harden properly.  That first month, the surface may release additional metals into the water.  So, even if you have run your water through the FillFast system, you still need to use a sequestering agent and a CuLator Ultra 4.0 to protect the surface.  Just leave the CuLator in your pump basket for several months to make sure your surface is perfect.  To protect from future staining, just replace the used CuLator Ultra 4.0 with a new one!

This works with vinyl pools, and fiberglass pools, as well!

If you are on well water, pre-filtering is the best solution.  Carbon and resin tanks and other pre-filters only get out particulate and treat small amounts of water.  The FillFast uses patented CuLator in a filter to remove the ionized stain-causing metals BEFORE they get into the swimming pool water:

And, FillFast treats up to 10,000 gallons!

Opening Your Pool with CuLator Metal Eliminator

Ultra PowerPak 4.0

When you open your pool here are a few hints:

  • Place a CuLator Ultra 4.0 into the pump basket and run a few days before adding any swimming pool chemicals (as long as the pH is above 7).
  • Leave the CuLator Ultra 4.0 in for the entire summer to grab metals out of the water and keep your water clear and to prevent staining.
  • If you are worried about any metal levels in the water, add some sequestering agent to the water to hold the metals in suspension until the CuLator will pull them out.

Review of CuLator Metal Eliminator with Before and After Shot

Before and After CuLator

Before and After CuLator

This pool was greenish from oxidized iron and lower alkalinity.  After the chemistry was balanced and a CuLator Ultra 4.0 was used to remove the metals from the water, the pool stair stains were gone, the cloudiness was gone, and the metals were out of the pool water.

Here is the review:

Hi,
I placed the CU Lator in the skimmer basket last week. The results from the test at Leslie’s is no copper. The chlorine and other test items were just about ok. So yesterday the family used the pool.
I want to thank you for the product, CU Lator, and the kind and attentive assistance you gave to me in getting my pool dilemma resolved.
Now I will have to learn how to balance the pool chemicals, so it  does not repeat again.
Thank you again and have a nice day.

Is CuLator a good choice for issues with blonde hair turning green?

YES!  CuLator is the perfect choice because it pulls copper out of the swimming pool water and the copper is what causes blonde hair to go green.  We recommend using a CuLator Ultra 4.0 when children, or anyone has hair turning green after swimming.  We have even had people call to say their very light skinned children have turned a bluish color.  Yep, that’s copper!  If you have gray hair your hair can turn bluish, as well.  That’s copper!

  Hair Turned Green from Swimming

When blonde hair turns green it is a sign that there is copper in the water.  Sequestering agents don’t get the copper out of the water, but CuLator does.

Here is what a used CuLator looks like with copper inside the CuLator Ultra 4.0.
